4 Makeup mistakes to avoid, according to Beyoncé’s go-to artist

From Beyoncé to Karlie Kloss, Chrissy Teigen, Joan Smalls and more, his list of celebrity clients is enough for us to sit up and pay attention to his beauty lessons. He has after all worked alongside famous industry icons such as Pat McGrath and Charlotte Tilbury. And he’s been responsible for some of Beyoncé’s most iconic beauty looks thus far. So when he shares some dos and don’ts of makeup, we’re all ears. You better be too!

Don’t find your foundation shade with your jawline

Forget what you’ve been told or read, the way to find your perfect shade of foundation is to match it to your forehead. According to Sir John, this is the most realistic fit as your forehead picks up the most sun throughout the day, thus it is the truest place to find your colour.

Don’t do makeup under harsh light

The first thing to note is that fluorescent lighting – like in your bathroom or hotel room –will distort how your makeup looks. If you’ve noticed how different you look in the vanity mirror at home compared to when you’re checking yourself in your car, time to move your dressing table closer to the windows with daylight. It is the best kind of light as it’s the most natural in gauging how you will look for the rest of the day.

Don’t do more than one statement feature

Understand your feature and choose to amp up only one part of your face. This means if you’re dressing up, keep the focus strong on either your eyes or lips, never both at the same time. Sir John reckoned that the women of today know the power of brows, but there are also other areas of focus you can play with like highlighting your skin.

Don’t go over the top with mascara and falsies

Less is more when it comes to your eyes. Yeah, we get it that you want to open up your peepers but truth is you don’t need to be dramatic about it. Sir John said that “overdosing” on false eyelashes and mascara is a common mistake that should be avoided. Be like Adriana Lima, whom the makeup artist thinks strikes the right balance with her timeless beauty.
