The BURO Impact Awards celebrates the creativity, originality, passion, and accomplishments of Malaysia’s trailblazing talents. Ahead, find our conversation with our Performer of the Year, Aisha Retno.
At a time when punchy beats, glossy synths, and lightweight lyricism are par for the course, one local artist dares to go against the grain, choosing instead to look inward. Aisha Retno is a breath of fresh air in an industry saturated with formulaic finesse. Taking a bold approach to music-making by way of genre experimentation, the singer-songwriter has created a sound that is uniquely hers, infusing modern melodies with memory-laden motifs.
This creative gamble has served her well. Her career trajectory over the last couple of years speaks for itself. The 25-year-old has received recognitions that most of her peers have yet to achieve. Her chart-topping single Sutera, which seamlessly blends electronic dance music with traditional Javanese elements, marked the beginning of her ascent as it placed second at the 38th Anugerah Juara Lagu. It was, according to her, one of her greatest achievements to date.
Keeping the momentum going, Aisha has filled her 2025 with many firsts. Her debut studio album [Re.Hab], for starters, was launched to rave reviews by fans and critics alike. Her live showcase The A.I.S.H.A Experience—a thoroughly rewarding undertaking following the heavily publicised cancellation of her concert last year—received a similar reception. As the year winds down, so does she, and we’re now getting a glimpse of a side previously unknown to many.

Which talent would you most like to have?
If I could have another talent, I would love to be a comedian. Musically, I’d love to learn a different musical instrument and eventually conduct an orchestra. That’s my biggest dream.
Who are your heroes in real life?
My brother is one of my superheroes because I work closely with him in music. He co-produces and co-writes with me, and without him, I feel like the world would be numb. Of course, my fans are also my superheroes. I wouldn’t be standing where I am today if it weren’t for them.
Who is your biggest musical influence?
I look up to Ariana Grande. I admire her not only because she’s a singer-songwriter, but also because of her persistence, consistency, and authenticity. She motivates me to pursue music passionately and stay true to myself.
Which historical figure do you most identify with?
Marilyn Monroe is iconic. To me, she is the epitome of female empowerment, having lived during a time of gender inequality and endured a world that underestimated her. Locally, I admire Saloma. They both inspire me to uplift others and stand strong.

What do you most value in your friends?
Trust and genuine connection. It can be hard to find truly trustworthy friends in the music industry. Those two traits are incredibly important to me when it comes to friendships.
What is your greatest fear?
I hate rollercoaster rides! But on a more serious note, losing someone I love is my greatest fear. Whether it’s family, close friends, or a significant other, losing a loved one feels like the end of the world. But I believe there’s always a silver lining.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
For me, it comes from feeling content and satisfied with whatever I’m doing. When satisfaction and relief meet, that’s when true happiness happens.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I procrastinate a lot, although sometimes I’ve turned it into a superpower, using the pressure that comes with it to work harder. Still, it’s something I want to improve on.

On what occasion do you lie?
I wouldn’t say I lie often. But sometimes, when I’m running late or my social battery is drained, I might tell a small lie. I try to balance it responsibly so no one gets hurt, especially when I really need to take care of myself.
What is your greatest extravagance?
Perfume. I love fragrances and have an extensive collection. I’m very particular about them and enjoy indulging in scents that truly speak to me. Currently, I’m obsessed with Diptyque’s Do Son. I love jasmine and floral scents. They are reflective of my personality.
Where would you most like to live?
Anywhere with my loved ones. But I’ll say that my dream destinations are Cappadocia and Bali. I love beaches and sunsets.
If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be?
I wouldn’t want to come back. Life is a responsibility given by God, and once it’s done, it’s done. I don’t see the need to return.
