Marc Jacobs has been visibly absent from the runway since the presentation of his nostalgically glamorous collection for AW20 (who remembers the viral-turned-iconic moment when a barefoot Gigi Hadid tip-toed across the candle-lit set after her heels broke backstage?). Turns out in between posts on the ‘gram, he’s been taking the time off to look inwards and reflect on his relationship with fashion before he makes his next move.
“On the journey back to doing what we love most, in the wake of immeasurable loss, loneliness, fear, anxiety, and uncertainty, I am reminded of why creativity is so vital to our existence. To life,” the designer says in a statement about the show. “And while the world continues to change with unimaginable speed, my love for fashion, the desire to create and share collections through this delivery system–the runway–endures. Through the physicality of this shared experience, I hope to offer a moment of inspiration, curiosity, wonder and possibility.”
And it is with triumph that Marc Jacobs moves forward. His AW21 collection is an exuberant mix of sportswear vernacular, monogram patterns and out-sized silhouettes full of dramatic volume and draped shapes to express a message of happiness. Parading through the New York Public Library, cocooned models don outsized outerwear—some with added function thanks to giant puffer collars—in contrasting black and white or vivid jewel tones.

Layered underneath were iterations of cut-out bodysuits paired with leather evening gloves and patterned midis as well as chunky knit sweaters and shimmering paillette dresses over loose, baggy ski trousers. Stomping in chunky Mary Jane platforms, some of the cast wore fun faux-fur scarves that trailed behind them like wedding veils while others went incognito in enveloping headscarves, snoods and baseball caps.
