George Town is getting lit this weekend with its biggest literary festival yet
“Hiraeth”—if words were forced for meaning, the definition could speak of a longing for a homeland that is no longer there

That longing so poignant yet astutely described by the Welsh word "hiraeth" is the hard-hitting theme for the sixth edition of the George Town Literary Festival (GTLF) to be held from 25 to 27 November 2016. Hailed as "one of the best literary festivals in the world" by Man Asian Prize Winner, Tan Twan Eng, GTLF returns with its largest line-up and boldest programme yet.

Over 60 writers, poets, filmmakers and performers from all corners of the map will converge on the Pearl of the Orient for an enlightening and provoking three days of workshops, presentations, panels and more.

The festival kicks off with a series of workshops; a keynote address by feminist activist and writer Zainah Anwar; an opening lecture by eminent British philosopher, founder of the New College of the Humanities, and author of over 30 books, A.C. Grayling; and a secret film screening.

Panel discussions, workshops, performances and readings are on the agenda for days two and three. A highlight to look out for is the captivating performance by Malaysia legends A. Samad Said and Cecil Rajendra together with their sons at Wisma Yeap Chor Ee.

Having made its mark as a literary festival that pushes boundaries, GTLF aptly enters its sixth year with a theme that sheds light on the universal unrest and longing for a better world. Weighing in are literary heavy weights like Adriaan van Dis, Ayu Utami, and Stefan Hertmas; alongside writers from Malaysia—Muhammad Haji Salleh, Tash Aw, Faisal Tehrani, Dina Zaman and Karim Raslan.
