Best of Baselworld 2018 Day 3: Omega, Patek Philippe, Corum, and Graham

OMEGA

Anniversary highlights: The Seamaster, Omega’s first family of watches, was launched back in 1948. This year, the iconic line celebrates its 70th anniversary with two Limited Edition models: the Seamaster 1948 Central Second and the Seamaster 1948 Small Seconds. Elegant tributes to the original Seamasters driven by new Master Chronometer movements, both timepieces are housed in stainless steel cases with pure dial designs, carrying a beautiful vintage charm. Omega also celebrates 25 years of the Seamaster Diver 300m, arming the well-loved diving watch with a bold facelift. The new model bears a larger case size of 42mm, ceramic dial and bezel, as well as the reintroduction of the wave pattern. A special edition limited to just 2,500 pieces is also created for the occasion, a stunning rendition crafted out of tantalum and titanium with touches of 18K Sedna gold.

Moon watch: A Speedmaster inspired by man’s first orbit around the moon is unveiled, featuring a skeletonised dial that puts Omega’s famous Moonwatch movement on display, where the bridges and mainplate are laser-treated to mimic the moon’s surface. “Well see you on the other side”, a quote by Apollo 8’s Command Module Pilot Jim Lovell on board the spacecraft, is engraved on the case back.

Contemporary shine: The refined Trésor collection is now available for women, with subtle yet alluring diamond-paved curves and a classic dial. Turn it over to the back and you’ll find a mirrored caseback with a “Her Time” design that is both practical and aesthetically-pleasing.

PATEK PHILIPPE

Horological art: Craftsmanship is always key at Patek Philippe. In the Minute Repeater World Time 5531R-001, the manufacture’s expertise in both high complications and artisanal crafts are on display, combining world time with a minute repeater that chimes the local time (represented by the city set at 12 o’clock on the dial), and a cloisonné enamel dial featuring a serene landscape of Lavaux vineyards overlooking the shores of Lake Geneva.

Ladies masterpiece: After discontinuing its Ladies Chronograph 7071 models with cushion-shaped cases in 2017, Patek Philippe introduces the new 7150/250R with a 38-mm rose gold round case adorned with 72 diamonds and the manually wound calibre CH 29-535 PS chronograph movement at its heart. What you might not be able to tell from the images is the sapphire-crystal box glass that adds visual depth to both the front and back of the timepiece, which is really quite beautiful to be admired in person.

CORUM

Power bubble: Corum’s Bubble has long been a platform for fun watch art and collaborations, but this year, it takes its first step towards fine watchmaking with its first tourbillon timepiece. The Bubble Centre Tourbillon features a centrally placed tourbillon, a strategic move given the magnifying effect of its signature domed sapphire crystal. There are no hands on the watch, instead the hour and minute markers are indicated on the flange.

High jewellery beauty: Glittering with watchmaking know-how, Corum’s Golden Bridge Round 39 flaunts intricate gold lacework set with marquise-cut gems on either side of the horizontal baguette movement—a light and airy architectural masterpiece that sparkles from within.

GRAHAM

Pin-up models: The latest additions to the Graham Chronofighter Vintage Nose Art Ltd collection expand its aviation origins to pay tribute to the glamorous dance and music scene that captivated the post-war era. The hand-painted glamour girls on the new timepieces each hold their own: Belle shows her appreciation for vinyl, Linda finds freedom in dance, Lucia sizzles in flamenco, and Chloe pays tribute to Moulin Rouge. Like the previous models, each design is limited to 100 pieces.
