It’s been more than a month since our #BuroRoadTrip and the thought of it still brings a smile to my face—especially thinking about the amazing food we had. The other enjoyable factor of the Penang leg of the trip was our stay at The Edison George Town, a new luxury boutique hotel on Lebuh Leith which is in close proximity to various popular hotspots in town. From the outside, it looks majestic with its gleaming white and grand architecture while within, there’s so much more than meets the eye.
Built in 1902, The Edison was originally a mansion rich with historical Anglo-Indian architectural elements belonging to a local Chinese businessman. Fast forward to today and after several handovers of the property, the hotel now beams of a new breathtaking appearance, inside and out, with modern touches that coexist with the ol’ colonial details and Peranakan elements. Above all, it has a story to tell. Do ask the Concierge for the tale when you’re there and you might even get a tour with it. We had several gasps, oohs and ahhs when we heard it from Ivan Khoo, Executive Assistant Manager of The Edison George Town (he also shared some of his favourite places on the island here).
Upon entering through the hotel’s front doors, you’ll notice a lovely scent lingering around. We’re told it’s a special fragrance for guests to associate with the hotel, which works wonderfully since it would greet us every time we return from our Penang escapades and it gave off the feeling that we’re home. My other personal favourite characteristic of The Edison is the unlimited access to snacks and beverages at The Lounge. There’s a mix of local favourites (Twisties, Chipsmore, Super Ring, and more) and healthy options (yoghurt, cereal, fruits and the likes) while the beverages include hot drinks from the coffee machine, tea, soft drinks and juices. It would have been complete if they had Milo. This made The Lounge easily one of our favourite places in the hotel as three of us sat huddled around one of the tables with our laptops after drinks to get some work done (sad but true).
Boutique hotels are usually sought after for its unique design and The Edison’s is impeccable. I feel that I cannot stress enough of how gorgeous and elegant the whole place is, especially our Deluxe Room where it’s essentially #roomgoals; and especially the bathroom in all its marble glory. My room mate and Senior Fashion Writer Jasmine Leong took a super Insta-worthy flatlay there (while I contentedly indulged in a cup of yoghurt I had nipped from The Lounge). It was also lovely to come back to the hotel after dark and find the room nicely prepared (with fruit-infused water and snacks) thanks to their signature turndown service.
Other facilities at The Edison include The Library, a comfortable space where guests can unwind with a book or two from the shelves; The Pool, humble in size and akin to an oasis in the middle of the city; The Cabana, the outdoor area of The Lounge with a view of The Pool and a great spot for drinks; and The Courtyard, an airy space (literally as it’s not covered by a roof here) in the centre of the main building with comfy sofas that served as a convenient waiting area for us during the trip, as well as an #ootd spot.
Essentially, our stay at The Edison was more than pleasant. It truly felt like a home away from home—but with a slight luxury and grandeur to it.
