The Gaomei Wetlands is a nature reserve renowned for its diverse ecosystem, encompassing mudflats and a variety of migratory birds. Covering approximately 1,500 hectares, the wetlands feature boardwalks where visitors can enjoy the refreshing sea breeze and breathtaking sunsets (or sunrise). The sight of wind turbines in the distance adds to the picturesque scenery.

BURO Tip: Be sure to check out the Gaomei Lighthouse, the only one in Taiwan with distinctive red and white horizontal bands. There’s also an ice cream shop next to it where you can indulge in two cups of ice cream for just 170 NTD (approximately RM23)!

DINNER: HALAL ENDE YUAN DUMPLING HOUSE

For a delicious start to your culinary adventure, head to Halal Ende Yuan Dumpling House. Their perfectly cooked dumplings are a must-try, and please don’t miss their specialty—the beef hot pot, which we confidently consider the best we’ve ever tasted.

DAY TWO

EXPLORE: LUKANG OLD STREET

Lukang, once a bustling harbour settlement, has blossomed into a town brimming with historical charm. Lukang Old Street, with its ancient houses and traditional shophouses, is a testament to its rich history. Immerse yourself in nostalgia by leisurely strolling through these historic streets dressed in Chinese traditional attire like Qipao or Cheongsam, which you can rent from local shops. For a truly authentic and memorable experience, consider taking a ride on an electric pedicab to explore not only the area but also nearby landmarks.

BURO Tip: When you ride the rickshaw, make sure to take a quick pitstop at Longshan Temple, one of the town’s largest temples. Also, don’t miss the chance to explore the vibrant murals at Lukang Artist Village.

EXPLORE: MIYAHARA

Miyahara was built in 1927 by Japanese ophthalmologist Dr. Miyahara Takekuma, and it was once the largest eye clinic in town. Today, it stands as a beloved tourist hotspot, known for its Hogwarts-inspired interior. Visitors flock here to savour a delightful array of desserts, including cookies, pineapple cakes and ice cream.

BURO Tip: The lines for ice cream at Miyahara can get quite long, so consider visiting Fourth Credit Union that is located nearby. Located just a few blocks away, this charming three-story café, which was once a bank, is operated by the same team behind Miyahara. The place offers ample of seating for you to enjoy your treats in comfort.

While Halal options are limited, you can easily find alternatives like samosas and vegetarian dishes.

During low tide seasons, visitors can join in on-site oyster picking activity, immersing themselves in the centuries-old tradition of oyster cultivation that thrives in this area.
