Everything you need to know about the Huawei P30 series

Just a week after its global launch in Paris, the Huawei P30 Series has officially landed in Malaysia. It comes in two variants: the P30 and P30 Pro. While it is not in stores just yet (more on that below), it is already available for pre-orders here. Should you take the plunge and cop this latest drop? We break down five reasons to say “yes” to that question:

1. The camera

By now, you would have probably heard of the P30 Pro’s incredible zoom capabilities of up to 50X. This is possible thanks to its SuperZoom lens, allowing the phone to support a high-fidelity magnification of 5X optical zoom and 10X hybrid zoom on top of the 50X zoom.

But impressive zoom capabilities aside, Huawei is really killing it in the camera corner. We daresay the P30 Pro could be sporting the best camera on a smartphone yet. Huawei knows it well too—its tagline for this series is “Rewrite the rules of photography” after all. While the P30 is equipped with the Leica Triple Camera System, the P30 Pro is crowned with a quad camera setup, packing camera tech that is as good as it comes within their categories.

If you are looking for a mid to premium range smartphone, the P30 might not have the 50X digital zoom capability or time-of-flight sensor (better portrait mode and AR experiences), it is still a very decent camera. Both phones are fitted with 40MP cameras, and have top notch low-light photography capabilities. The P30 Pro of course comes out superior in this aspect, and If you thought the Google Pixel 3’s Night Sight was good, this is even better—even without Night Mode on. Click into the images below to see what we mean.

2. The display

The P30 features a 6.1″ OLED display with Full HD+ resolution, and the Pro version comes with 6.47″ dual-curved OLED display with Full HD+ resolution—both with barely there bezels to give users as much display as possible. Huawei dropped the 3D face scanning hardware for a notch that is a lot smaller compared to that of the Mate 20 Series, but this is made up for by a highly-responsive in-display fingerprint reader that unlocks the screen 30% faster than before, so no real losses there.

3. Battery Life

The P30 Pro gets a large 4,2000mAh battery that supports their latest 40W SuperCharge technology via USB-C, which is able to charge 70% in 30 minutes—you pretty much don’t have to worry about bringing along a power bank every time you go out. It also supports wireless charging. The P30 is fitted with a slightly smaller 3,650mAh battery that charges with the previous gen 22.5W SuperCharge via USB-C. You won’t be able to charge it wirelessly, but fret not, because every purchase of the P30 will come with a free charging case—they thought of everything! On the other hand, each P30 Pro comes together with a Huawei Snorkeling Case to complement its water resistance capability.

4. It’s powerful, alright

Powering both models is the Kirin 980, the world’s first mobile process chipset that offers stronger performance and lower power consumption. The P30 Pro will be available in both 256GB and 512GB storage capacities, while only the 128GB model will be brought in for the P30.

5. It comes in gorgeous colourways

The P30 Series come in three different hues inspired by the sky: Breathing Crystal, which captures the beauty of a rosy dawn and mid-day sky with a lovely gradient; Aurora flaunts a green-blue sheen that is just as stunning as the phenomenon it is named after; and Black, the go-to option for the minimalist that reflects the darkness of night.

Finally, the price and release date in Malaysia. The Huawei P30 Pro and P30 will be available from 6 April 2019 onwards in selected Huawei Experience Stores (see the full list here), authorised resellers and major telco companies. If you act fast, you might just be one of the lucky ones to receive a Huawei Backup worth RM599 for free with your purchase.

The price points are as follows:

P30 8GB RAM + 128GB storage – RM2,699

P30 Pro 8GB RAM + 256GB storage – RM3,799

P30 Pro 8GB RAM + 512GB storage – RM4,399
