Three big names join the cast of Disney’s live-action Mulan

Disney’s live-action Mulan film is slowly but surely taking shape. Since announcing the production nearly two years ago, the release date has been pushed back from November this year to 27 March 2020. But it looks like it will be well worth the wait, as the cast list is looking stellar at the moment. In addition to Liu Yifei, who’ll be playing the lead heroine, major stars Gong Li, Jet Li and Donnie Yen have been announced to join the cast.

It is no secret that the live-action remake will not be sticking strictly to the original plot. For starters, there will be no Captain Li Shang, but instead a new character named Chen Honghui, Mulan’s rival-turned-love interest in the film—the role has yet to be cast. Gong Li will be playing the villain, who is described as a “powerful witch”, while Donnie Yen is set to star as Commander Tung, Mulan’s “mentor”. Jet Li is reportedly in final talks to play the emperor of China.

The film will be directed by Niki Caro, with shooting slated to begin this August in China and New Zealand.
