Another day, another drama: Bad Blood between Taylor Swift and Scooter Braun

Everyone needs to calm down. Another day, another drama. This time, it involves the darling of music, Taylor Swift. This began when Taylor accused Scooter Braun of bullying in a lengthy post on here. In case you’re unfamiliar with this name, Scooter Braun manages Justin Bieber, Kanye West, and Demi Lovato among many others as well as helped kickstart Carly Rae Jepsen’s career (remember Call Me Maybe?). As of today, he is also the owner of most of Taylor Swift’s music—masters to six of her albums to be exact. All this a result of his acquisition of record label Big Machine for $300 million. Yes, if you’re thinking that he’s going to earn money from every song released by Taylor before ME (featuring Brendan Urie), you’re absolutely right.

According to her long post, a record deal she signed when she was 15 denies her the rights to her own music. What else did Taylor say in her post?

  • “All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years”. Her albums released between 2006 and 2017 are now still owned by Big Machine (hence, Scooter Braun). Moreover, she added that she only discovered of the sale of the label when it was announced.
  • “For years I asked, pleaded for a chance to own my work”. It’s unfortunate but Taylor was offered the opportunity to earn “one album back at a time” to substitute with every new recording. Leaving her past meant signing to Universal’s Republic Records label and leaving Big Machine.

Taylor Swift also mentioned Justin Bieber by sharing a photo posted by the Canadian singer after the infamous Kanye West-Kim Kardashian-Taylor Swift leaked phone call. She deemed that an example of the bullying she faced. Bullying, no matter the circumstances, is wrong. While Justin has apologised for the photo, he criticised Taylor for putting Scooter Braun on blast on social media. He continued in his Instagram post that “neither Scooter or I have anything negative to say about you. We truly want the best for you“. Guess it’s never really over? Glad that Katy Perry-Taylor Swift beef has ended, no?

You can’t really talk about the entire incident without mentioning the man who sold the label in the first place—Scott Borchetta. The founder has come out to spil the tea on the unruly drama. In his post, he wrote that “Taylor had every chance in the world to own not just her master recordings, but every video, photograph, everything associated to her career.  She chose to leave”. That isn’t all—he also said that “Scooter has always been and will continue to be a supporter and honest custodian for Taylor and her music”. Shouldn’t everyone just support each other?

So what’s the truth, and who isn’t being honest here? Demi Lovato, Todrick Hall, Cara Delevigne, and even Yael Cohen Braun (who also happens to be Scooter Braun’s wife) have all had their opinions known about the incident. This opens a whole new can of worms. If one doesn’t believe Taylor, would you consider that as untrusting of women? How about if Taylor’s wrong (gag) and Scooter Braun actually does only have positive things to say about her? All that can happen from now is—hopefully—all drama gets resolved as soon as possible.
