‘The Devil Wears Prada’ to be adapted into a musical

First came the book in 2003, then the movie in 2006 and next up, the musical adaptation. The Devil Wears Prada is headed to Broadway as news emerged that pop star Sir Elton John and playwright Paul Rudnick have signed on to write a stage musical.

The story that follows an aspiring journalist named Andy Sachs (played by Anne Hathaway in the blockbuster hit) as she tries to navigate the unfamiliar world of elite fashion magazine has become a cult favourite among many girls (and guys!).

Meryl Streep killed it in her role as the terrifying, icy editor Miranda Priestly, choosing to portray her character in a more complex manner than intended in the book, in which Vogue’s Anna Wintour was the muse. Thus, it will be interesting to see how Elton and Paul will be translating her character in the stage production.

Though the project has been in the pipeline for a couple of years, the signing on of Elton and Paul marks a significant step in making the Broadway move a success.

“Re-imagining The Devil Wears Prada for the musical theatre is super exciting,” said Elton John. “I’m a huge fan of both the book and the feature film, and a huge aficionado of the fashion world. I can’t wait to sink my musical teeth into this hunk of popular culture.”

Needless to say, the excitement is mutual! The project’s cast and timeline have not been confirmed yet but we’re crossing our fingers the musical will do the film justice.
