Pop culture’s biggest event is happening right now in San Diego and as much FOMO as we have, we’re still reeling from excitement with all the goodness Marvel blessed us with this morning.
Fans were left hanging about the MCU’s future when Avengers: Endgame ended. There have been rumours about what phase four would bring but any true Marvel fan will know that if it doesn’t come out of Kevin Feige’s own mouth, it probably isn’t true. Before we dive into the future, let’s take a step back to see what secrets the writers of the new worldwide Box Office champion had to offer.
Deleted scenes and initial draft ideas
Avengers: Endgame was the epic conclusion of Marvel’s Infinity Saga that spanned over 20 movies. Screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed to the SDCC crowd on Friday that the movie we now know and love could have turned out very differently.
For starters, hybrid Professor Hulk was meant to be introduced in the third act of Infinity War. “We wrote it, we shot it, and went on to shoot most of Endgame, and he achieved union with the Hulk while inside the Hulkbuster. He kicked Cull Obsidian’s ass. But it didn’t work. It was the wrong tone for the movie,” Markus revealed.

Next, the writing duo revealed that shots for Endgame was about 99% done before Infinity War came out in April 2018 and revealed that they had to rework Thor’s storyline in Infinity War because it “sucked rocks” (he originally had to get the axe while fighting a serpent you see). Speaking of Thor, Natalie Portman’s character, Jane, originally had more screen time in Endgame. The cut scene shows Rocket and Jane talking to one another as he tried to explain what was happening when he took the stone out of her. So clearly we can now scratch the rumours about her beef with Marvel off.
As for Thanos, according to the co-writers, there is a version out there where the big bad returns with the head of dead Captain America from around 2014 to intimidate the Avengers in 2023 (excuse us, but what?!). Fans were promised this will be explained in the commentary track on the upcoming Blu-ray release. Markus and McFeely also admitted that the scene of Hawkeye and Black Widow in Vormir almost never happened. “In the manifesto document (early on in the script writing process), there was one theory that it was Cap who goes to space,” Markus remembered, “and he has to collaborate with Red Skull to get the Stone.”
Last but not least, Robert Downey Jr. originally had some final words to say during his emotional last scene but the actor himself thought it would be much more powerful for Tony to be silent for once. We have to agree on that one.
Marvel Phase 4
Early this Sunday morning, Marvel Studios took to Hall H to announce the upcoming slate of movies that’s coming our way. Given their absence for the past two years, the studio promised to have one of its biggest panels at this year’s San Diego Comic Con and they didn’t disappoint.
