A proposal, the big winners, and other highlights you might have missed at the 2018 Emmys

This year’s ceremony was hosted by comedians Colin Jost and Michael Che, but before the Saturday Night Live duo took to the stage, the show kicked off with ‘We Solved It’—a cheeky song-and-dance number highlighting the issue of diversity by an ensemble that included the likes of Kate McKinnon, Kenan Thompson, Ricky Martin, Titus Burgess, RuPaul, and Kristen Bell. Sandra Oh—the first Asian actress to be nominated in the lead actress category!—gets a part from the audience seat too.

Those with sharp eyes might have noticed Donald Glover’s (creepy) Teddy Perkins character from Atlanta in the audience, prompting curiousity on who was in disguise at the awards show. It was later reasoned that it wasn’t Glover in makeup—the actor was captured on camera applauding Thandie Newton’s win for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama. Some say it was his Atlanta co-star Lakeith Stanfield. Was it?

Later that evening, Glenn Weiss’ win for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special turned into one of the most memorable moments of the show. After his thankyous, he said his win was bittersweet as his mother just passed away two weeks ago. “Mum always believed in finding the sunshine in things, and she adored my girlfriend Jan. Jan, you are the sunshine in my life, and mum was right, don’t ever let go of your sunshine. You wonder why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend—because I want to call you my wife.” After Jan went on stage, Glenn proceeded to propose, presenting her with his late mother’s ring while the A-list crowd gave their stamp of approval with a standing ovation. Benedict Cumberbatch’s reaction says it all.

Fan favourite Game of Thrones had the honour of being the biggest winner of the night, taking home nine awards, including Outstanding Drama and an Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series win for Peter Dinklage. It was a big night for the Brits too, with Claire Foy nabbing the best actress in a drama award, while Welsh actor Matthew Rhys won best leading actor in a drama series, and Westworld‘s Thandie Newton took home her first Emmy for best supporting actress in a drama series, just to name a few.
