‘Empire Records’ to get a musical adaptation this 2020

If you grew up in the 90s, you will remember Empire Records being the movie that speaks most to the youths of a generation. The film featuring a stellar cast that includes Liv Tyler, Renée Zellweger, Rory Cochrane, and etc, is about a group of record store employees who comes together in a bid to save their store from being bought over by a large retain chain.

Along the way, the movie addresses young adult drama and issues that people of all ages can identify with. Of course, music played a significant role in a film that is named Empire Records, where songs from 90s alt-rock bands like Better Than Ezra, Gin Blossoms and the Cranberries were featured. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out on stage.

For the musical, the film’s original writer, Carol Heikkinen will be tasked to adapt her script and to develop the characters through dialogue and lyrics. The story was after all based on her experience working at Tower Records. This will not be a traditional Broadway show but more contemporary in its approach and style. Empire Records the musical is targetted to premiere in 2020.

In the meantime, get a dose of nostalgia from the soundtrack below:
