The cream of the crop in U.S. prime time television was honoured last night (earlier today for us) at the 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. Jimmy Kimmel returns to host the show this year, and he had quite the trip there:
When Kimmel missed out on an award for Best Variety Talk Series, Matt Damon casually strolled on stage while munching on an apple, jokingly taunting the host for not winning. It was an entertaining continuation for what has to be one of the best running jokes in TV history, which started 11 years ago during the third season of Jimmy Kimmel Live! when Kimmel made an off-handed comment at the end of a dull show: “I want to apologise to Matt Damon. We ran out of time.”
Game of Thrones led the pack this year with 23 nominations, and it already scooped up seven awards at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards the previous night. The show had quite a lot to live up to, seeing how it won 12 Emmys out of 24 nominations last year, and it is safe to say it did it—Game of Thrones took home the best drama award for the second year in a row, along with two other trophies that night, making it 10 out of 23 this year.
