Coming this Autumn 2017 – ‘Mean Girls’, the musical

We were first introduced to the story of a home-schooled girl played by Lindsay Lohan, who upon returning to the US with her family from Africa found herself getting caught in the high school caste system. Assimilating herself into the popular female clique known as the Plastics, she plots the girls’ downfall from the inside but instead come to a realisation that she’s compromising her own principles.

Alongside Lindsay Lohan, the movie also starred Rachel McAdams as Regina George – the Queen Bee, together with Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert as her cohorts.

That was 2004 and now this year, Mean Girls is getting a musical release. The show is scheduled to premier at the National Theatre in Washington, US this October.

The original screenplay written by Tina Fey will be adapted by the actress/scriptwriter herself for the musical with her composer husband, Jeff Richmond and lyricist, Nell Benjamin on board. Casey Nicholaw, a Tony Award winner, will direct the stage production.

It will be interesting to see how the team will incorporate some of the most memorable high school banters like “You can’t sit with us”, “On Wednesdays, we wear pink”, and “That’s why her hair is so big, it’s full of secrets” into the music.
