Among Us is the latest craze in video games—and here’s why the game about betrayal is so popular
With the world currently in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, many around the globe are still self-isolating at home—with nations (and cities) slowly easing restrictions on movements. Throughout the past few months, we saw a tremendous amount of lockdown trends, from Dalgona coffee and frog bread to cereal pancakes and Animal Crossing. Now, there’s a new addition to the list and it goes by the name of Among Us.
Set in space, Among Us—made by InnerSloth—is a murder mystery game from 2018. Although the video games was released two years, it did not receive the attention it deserves until now. The game had a good amount of players in Brazil and South Korea but only really blew up when Sodapoppin (with 2.8 million followers on Twitch) started streaming the game.
According to Forest Willard, a developer at InnerSloth, the company decided to cancel plans for a sequel and instead, “give back to the players a little bit faster than creating a new, better version.” It was also revealed that Among Us has garnered more than 3.5 million users worldwide so far. That’s impressive!
So, what is Among Us about and how do you even begin to play? You have to first download the game, of course. Among Us is available on iOS, Android, and Steam. Based on InnerSloth’s description, the game involves joining “your crewmates in a multiplayer game of teamwork and betrayal” and you can play “with four to 10 players as you attempt to hold your spaceship together and return back to civilisation.” Oh, there might be an alien impostor on board, by the way.
To maintain anonymity, no one can talk. It is The Impostor’s mission to sabotage the ship until a member of the crew is eliminated. However, the crew wins if The Impostor is voted off. Described as the ideal game for social engagement, expect a lot of deception, lying, and betrayal. All in the name of fun, of course!
