What’s different with the new Volvo XC60 T8 Twin Engine—now in Malaysia

Fact: The original XC60 has sold nearly a million units globally, proving its hand at crafting stylish and dynamic SUVs with the latest technology at its heart. And now, its long-awaited successor has arrived. The new XC60, built on the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, will maintain the beautiful proportions of its larger sibling but with a more expressive design—inside and out. Already it has scored a near perfect 98 per cent in the Adult Occupant category; 95 per cent in the Large Off-Road vehicle class; and the title of Best Overall Performance by the prestigious Euro NCAP 2017.

“Volvo has a vision that by the year 2020, no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car—this recent award underlines our leadership in safety technologies and makes the new XC60 one of the safest cars that we have ever made,” said Lennart Stegland, Managing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia.

The tech

IntelliSafe comes standard in the new XC60 and includes the usual staple of active, preventive and protective safety systems such as City Safety (Autonomous Emergency Braking), BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) and Rear Collision Warning and Mitigation. City Safety can detect and help avoid collisions with other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and large animals. This and BLIS now features Steer Assist, a system that provides automatic steering assistance that will—when required—avoid potential collisions.

A new successor equals new skills and the XC60 features a new system called Oncoming Lane Mitigation. Similarly, it alerts drivers of vehicles from an oncoming lane to avoid possible collisions and if necessary, provide automatic steering assistance to guide the car out of the path. Then, there’s Pilot Assist—an advanced semi-autonomous driver assistance system which takes care of steering, acceleration and braking on well-marked roads up to 130 km/h.

The performance

Powered by a combination of a turbo- and supercharged petrol engine as well as an electric motor, the new XC60 is able to produce an impressive combined output of 407 hp and 640 Nm of torque. In other words, it’s able to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in only 5.3s and yet records an efficient 2.1 litre of fuel for every 100 km—and a pure electric range of 45 km (NEDC Hybrid Combined Cycle).
