Cruising towards autonomous driving: The new Volvo XC90

Fun fact: did you know Volvo developed the three-point seatbelt that is used by all the cars today? That was back in 1959. Today, Volvo continues to initiate groundbreaking technologies, as seen in its newest introduction—the all-new Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine.

The new XC90 is a premium seven-seat SUV equipped with industry-leading safety technologies, and powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain that delivers an unrivalled combination of power, fuel efficiency and low emissions. It is the first Volvo model built on the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) modular chassis technology.

The innovative electrical architecture in SPA elevates the car’s intelligence level significantly, allowing it to integrate with new technologies such as microprocessor, sensor and camera technology with ease. The XC90 features two world-first technologies: a run-off road protection function and auto brake at intersection capability.

On the driver support side, Volvo is on its way to make autonomous driving a reality. The new Adaptive Cruise Control with Pilot Assist enables safe and comfortable semi-autonomous driving by automatically following the vehicle ahead in stop-and-go traffic. Acceleration, braking, as well as steering are controlled automatically.

The XC90 T8 Twin Engine is Volvo’s top-of-the-range powertrain which combines a supercharged and turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, offering an unrivalled combination of power and clean operation: 407 horsepower with carbon dioxide emissions as low as 49g/km. Normal driving is conducted in default hybrid mode, but this can be switched to a quiet and emission-free city driving on pure electric power (40km range) at the push of a button.

Design-wise, the exterior bears a classic robust yet elegant aesthetic, while the interior is made for modern luxury, featuring the finest Nappa leather and wood with handcrafted details, and a gear lever made of crystal glass from Orrefors.

The recommended retail price for the new Volvo XC90 CBU unit is RM453,888 (on-the-road price without insurance, inclusive of 6% GST). For more information, visit the website
