Indulge in the perfect teatime with these Singaporean delicacies

There’s always a special culinary experience to be had in every country, and Singapore—a city with diverse aspirations, commitment to tradition and drive for innovation—has plenty of those. Lucky for foodies all around, the annual Singapore Food Festival will return for its 29th edition from 24 to 11 September 2022, presenting a delectable spread of in-person gastronomic experiences—based on heritage, contemporariness and innovation—such as workshops, tours and exclusive menus at partner restaurants. Whether you’re an adventurous eater or love the balance between old and new dishes, this event has everything you need to satiate cravings.

The ‘Garden City’ boasts impressive authentic local fare. While there are great breakfast, lunch and dinner options abound, afternoon tea is perfect for special occasions. Moreover, hosting teatime in the comfort of your home is definitely ideal for catch-ups with loved ones. Here’s what we’d recommend serving for an intimate get-together.

Kim Choo Kueh Chang

Must-try: Not to be missed from this family business is its signature rice dumplings that come in the shape of a pyramid. Wrapped in bamboo leaves, each one is stuffed with various savoury fillings such as chicken and chilli prawns. The latest highlight is the Cantonese Bean Chang, comprising shiitake mushrooms, chestnuts, and juicy fatty pork, elevated with a touch of sweetness thanks to mung bean. There are even vegetarian options too!

Discover the brand: Kim Choo Kueh Chang launched in 1945 by Lee Kim Choo, a Straits-Chinese Peranakan woman, who started selling rice dumplings under a banyan tree at the cross junction of Joo Chiat place and Everitt Road in Singapore. Intending to revitalise its Peranakan heritage, Kim Choo Kueh Chang now offers a wide variety of products–which include in-house designed kebayas and Peranakan beaded slippers–and services such as a cooking studio, textile studio and a public space on its second floor for events that contribute to the preservation of culture.

Not only that, but Kim Choo Kueh Chang is also the first private entity to become an official Singapore Visitor Centre for the precinct of Katong-Joo Chiat, which opened in January 2020.
