Mid-Autumn Festival 2023: Mooncake collections with intriguing flavours

We’re less than a month away from the Mid-Autumn Festival, so it’s time to double down on gift ideas for your loved ones. If you’re on the hunt for something more unique this year, these establishments have one-of-a-kind mooncake flavours that you have to try. 

 

 

1. MANDARIN ORIENTAL KUALA LUMPUR 

Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur took the classic route with its packaging this year and instead, got a little creative with the mooncake flavours. For its 2023 mooncake collection, the luxury hotel’s Executive Pastry Chef, Kevin Pannier, has created a range of decadent chocolate mooncakes that are available in three flavours—Dulcey Chocolate with Raspberry and Peanuts, Mango-Vanilla, and one of the bestsellers, the Malaysian Dark Chocolate Ganache. 

Its snowskin mooncakes also have an array of unique flavours like Matcha Cream Cheese with Oreo cookies and Lotus Paste; Pandan Lotus Paste with Cashews, Macadamias, Almonds and Peanut butter; and of course, Musang King Durian—because what’s a celebration without the king of fruits? Furthermore, its traditional baked mooncakes are available in classic flavours like Assorted Mixed Nuts, Lotus Paste with Single Yolk, Pandan Paste with Single Yolk, Red Bean Paste with Almond Flakes, and Low Sugar White Lotus Paste.

2. LE PETIT FOUR 

This year, Le Petit Four presents a refreshing take on their mooncakes. The bakery is giving a fruity twist to their collection by incorporating fruits that surprisingly pair well with classic mooncake flavours. Opt for the Red Bean with Orange Peel or Pu Er with Osmanthus Lemon Yuzu if you prefer a refreshing, citrusy bite. On the other hand, if you still want to bite into a sweet treat, go for the Red Dates with Pecan Nuts.

This Mid-Autumn Festival, why not go for literal cakes instead? Taobaocakes has released its mooncake-inspired non-mooncake collection that consists of what it knows best—no-nonsense cakes made with the best French butter. Each set consists of three four-inch cakes of different flavours. Taste the signature Hazelnut Burnt Butter cake that is a dense yet moist cake with ground hazelnuts, topped with salted chocolate ganache, and praline pecans. The Sesame-Brittle cake is a salted butter and almond cake that has sesame seeds and caramel crust on top, while the Five-Nut and Orange Frangipane Tart is inspired by the classic five-nut mooncake.

4. OH CHA MATCHA

Dairy-free, sugar-free, vegan-friendly, and oh-so-delicious! Oh Cha Matcha’s snow skin mooncakes are back this year in four flavours—Matcha Mung Bean, Hojicha Mung Bean, Genmaicha Mung Bean, and Gyokuro Mung Bean.

However, this year, Oh Cha Matcha has also added a collaboration with Kintry to its collection. These mooncakes are a mix of Oh Cha Matcha’s Traditional Baked Matcha Skin mooncakes and Kintry’s premium granolas. Each mooncake has two layers which consist of white lotus filling and is topped with four different flavours of granola—Chocolate Hazelnut, Pandan Gula Melaka, Salted Butter Caramel, and Honey Quinoa.

Craving a different kind of mooncake this year? Then the chocolate mooncakes from Chocolate Concierge and Mei by Fatspoon are the perfect choice for you! This collection consists of decadent chocolate mooncakes that come in four flavours and are encased in a delightful chocolate shell. Godiva’s 2023 Mooncake Collection combines the layering in Western desserts with traditional Eastern flavours like black sesame and ginger. Among the flavours include the tangy Matcha Citrus White Chocolate that has a burst of yuzu and citrus with white chocolate and green tea ganache encased in a green tea-flavoured shell. If you prefer something more decadent, try the Black Truffle Apricot Dark Chocolate Mooncake that has layers of authentic Italian black truffle ganache and pâte de apricot and lustrous dark chocolate.

As an ode to the bountiful harvests of yesteryears, TWG Tea has reinterpreted mooncakes for modern connoisseurs and tea aficionados. The Grand Miracle Tea Mooncake Collection is encased in a vermillion red box and includes handmade tea-infused treats which are available in two flavours—Constellation and Ruby. Constellation has a brown lotus filling infused with Singapore Breakfast Tea, while Rub has a white lotus filling that’s infused with Milk Oolong.

Inside Scoop’s ice cream mooncake collection is back with four unique flavours—Pistachio Raspberry, Durian, Rocher Yuzu, and Mango Coconut. Each mooncake is combined with a fruit for a more refreshing taste; the Pistachio Raspberry has pistachio sorbet swirled with raspberry and encased in a delicate chocolate shell; Rocher Yuzu has a yuzu chocolate shell that’s filled with rocher ice cream and yuzu jam yolk; while the Mango Coconut is a combination of mango coconut ice cream and mango jam wrapped in snow skin. The collection wouldn’t be complete without its best-selling ice cream, Durian, that’s paired with a chocolate yolk and wrapped in snow skin.
