Ramadan 2021: The ‘buka puasa’ menus in KL that you should know about

Ramadan buffets are back, and better than before. If you’re wondering what the hotels are up to and just having a hard time deciding where to have your iftar dinners, this list is for you. While the dishes evoke nostalgic memories and please the palate, and stomach, the most important thing at the end of the day is breaking fast and spending time with loved ones. What better way to do so than with food. Here are some of the best Ramadan buffets in the Klang Valley for 2021 and if you prefer to take the more cautious route, there are a couple of hotels that offer takeaway and/or delivery too.

1. Buffet dinner: Malam Warisan Melayu 2021

When: 19 April – 7 May 2021

Time: 6.30pm – 10pm, daily

Where: The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur

Price: RM238+ per person

Interstate travel may not be allowed just yet, but The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur is offering a culinary journey through the 14 states of Malaysia for this Ramadan period. Executive Sous Chef, Norazizi bin Taslim and Banquet Chef, Mohd Ridzwan bin Mohamed Rasit, and their team will be preparing dishes based on heirloom recipes that have been handed down through many generations.

Highlights:

Negeri Sembilan – Smoked Lamb Shank with Fresh Turmeric, Bird’s Eye Chili and Fresh Coconut Milk

Perak – Braised Beef Short Ribs that melts in your mouth after being braised for six whole hours

Indigenous rendang dishes – Mussels Rendang and Beef Lunch Rendang accompanied with lemang

Delivery: Malam Warisan Melayu Box

Price: RM448+ (4 pax) | RM888+ (8 pax)

Alternatively, order in and break fast in the comforts of your home. The Malam Warisan Melayu Box similarly features heirloom recipes and ingredients from all 14 Malaysian states. We had the opportunity to try the box, and we were not disappointed at all. While most of the dishes were traditional, some were given a creative and modern reinterpretation.

For the kerabu (Sabah), the fiddlehead fern salad was cushioned within a beancurd for extra texture. Instead of your usual otak-otak wrapped in leaves, the otak-otak kempas (Johor) was grilled with coconut gel, shaped into rectangular cubes, topped with thinly sliced cucumbers, edible flowers and caviar. The sate ayam (Selangor) looked nothing like your typical charred meat on skewers. Instead, the chicken has been minced into a dense, chewy form with a subtle peanut dip and chicken floss on top. Kudos to the team for such creativity.

For the mains, the top points go to the Perak Rendang Tok (six-hour braised beef short ribs with roasted coconut) and the Wilayah Persekutuan Nasi Basmati Saffron. The beef is so tender that it tears away easily—a testament to the careful and slow cooking methods.

The team’s efforts continued to shine in the dessert selections: Kedah Pomelo Sago, Johor Pineapple Tart (in a unique appam-balik-like shape), Pahang Nutmeg Madeleines and Sarawak Soursop Pops.

Last, but not least, the box includes two sambal jars as accompaniments: Terengganu Sambal Hitam Belimbing and Melaka Sambal Udang Kering & Bunga Kantan.
