5 Cool co-working spaces in KL you’ll want to work in

Without realising it, co-working spaces have mushroomed enough in KL to be called a growing trend among Malaysians. 2017 alone has launched more new spaces than in the previous year and some of these said new spaces are backed by some familiar power players in the country; which goes to show entrepreneurs and businessmen are seeing the potential of investing in co-working spaces in Malaysia.

It is possibly the way to work for the current and future generation, and it’s not a backless claim since studies have shown employees thrive at least a point higher than the average employee working in a traditional office. Care to give it a go? Read on for five of the coolest co-working spaces that opened up in KL this year.

*There are many plans and packages offered by each of these co-working space. As a rough guide, we will only feature the pricing for Hot Desk.

1. Colony

The brainchild of Timothy Tiah and his wife Audrey Ooi which exceeded breakeven figures by the third month of operations (“a decent profit”) is a success story worth following—though Tiah is humble about his restart in this new field of business. Colony was only launched in late July 2017 but a quick glimpse of the space is inviting enough, if not more, and we don’t just mean the aesthetics.

Common Ground

Launched in March 2017, Common Ground is a shared vision by its founders to support the entrepreneurial community. One of these founders being Roen Cian, an established entrepreneur himself. Deemed as one of the largest co-working spaces in Malaysia at 17,000 square feet, it reached full occupancy within four months of its opening. Beyond merely providing a nice-looking space to work in, the idea was to create the right mix of community and lifestyle. It is also about building relationships. Common Ground most certainly has found a good formula as with their success, they already have expansion plans not just within Malaysia but around Southeast Asia as well.

Komune

Having over 15 partners, which includes UOA Group, MDEC, Go Car, supahands and Uber, Komune is certainly a literal embodiment of the derivation of its name—the word ‘community’. Here, the aesthetics of its 18,000 square feet space is everything Pinterest-worthy: Soft pastel tones and nature-inspired accents. All designed to promote productivity and invoke a sense of peace and tranquillity. But that’s not the only thing that sets Komune apart from the others as they offer k$ (K dollar), a form of currency that is essentially credit allocation that comes with monthly membership plans. Members will be able to use them for a wide range of services and amenities such as booking Event Space, Locker Rental, and even cafe purchases.

CO3 Social Office

You know how a few years ago people talked about how some traditional offices are not so traditional? Kind of like most Google offices? CO3 Social Office is built with that element of fun— they have a slide. Of course, it’s not all games as the idea is to offer a hip communal living space where people can become good friends, form networks and share ideas freely. There are plans to open four more offices next year.

Fun fact: Taiwanese/Bruneian artist Wu Zun is one of the eight founders.

Worq

Funded by Cradle, SMG and 500 Startups, Worq gained 95 percent occupancy by the time of their official launch. As most co-working spaces tend to skew towards the tech industry, Worq wanted theirs to appeal to the mass as a whole and it worked out. They now have members from various industries in various sizes and maturity who could all share business advice and provide support.

Fun fact: Britain’s Prince Charles recently paid them a visit to have a closer look at how entrepreneurship and development of startups were being cultivated in KL.
