The best of PFW SS19 day 9: Chanel’s straw caps

Chanel is known to pull all the stops when presenting a show. In the recent years, the French legacy house transformed The Grand Palais into a forest in the height of autumn, ceiling-high waterfalls, a rocket-ship platform and a data centre. For Spring/Summer 2019, Karl Lagerfeld looked to the beach, and the show set depicted a day at the beach, real sand and waves included. Clad in elevated beach-ready looks (tweed at the beach, anybody?), the models walked the runway with their toes in the sand, sandals in hand.

A day at the beach calls for a wide brim hat in light straw and that they delivered. The top of the hat sits high above the crown like a top hat, with its edges raw—a structured alternative the floppy oversized hats we’ve seen of late. What struck our attention were the caps in braided straw, emblazoned with Chanel logography on the front, embellished with a strip of leather in place of a traditional hat band. There’s been much ado about straw hats on the internet (read: #HatGate), so if you’re looking for a fresh update here’s the trend to try.
