Recap: What the stars wore to the Met Gala 2018

The first Monday in May is no doubt fashion’s biggest day of the year, as A-listers and fashion’s It-crowd come together to bring the weird and the wonderful from the realms of fashion to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Last year’s theme—Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination—is definitely one of the most controversial ones yet. Co-chaired by Amal Clooney, Rihanna and Donatella Versace alongside Anna Wintour, the exhibition featured “some 40 Vatican vestments and accessories spanning 15 papacies” from the Vatican such as Pope Benedict XV’s embroidered silk cape and Pope Leo XIII’s bishop hat. Other than that, pieces from Chanel, John Galliano, Cristóbal Balenciaga and Donatella Versace were on display as well. To no one’s surprise, it ended up being the Met Museum’s most visited exhibition in history, with a record of over 1.66 million visitors, according to a release from the museum.

The 2018 Met Gala attendees took on the memo seriously and addressed the theme with oh-so-regal looks that feature an array of religious imagery. The prints on Ariana Grande’s Vera Wang was inspired by the Sistine Chapel ceiling, Sarah Jessica Parker’s gold nativity scene headpiece was out of the world, and co-chair Rihanna shut it down as usual by rocking up to the red carpet as a (high-fashion) pope in a beaded corset mini dress from Maison Margiela.

Here are the stars who reigned supreme in their ensembles last year, and stay tuned for our 2019 coverage next week:
