Karl Lagerfeld receives the highest distinction Paris can offer

Chanel never shies away from a spectacle but at the Maison’s FW17 haute couture show yesterday, it was not the magnificent feather-trimmed finale gown nor the jaw-dropping ‘Chanel Tower’—a scale model of the iconic Parisian monument, la tour Eiffel—built within the Grand Palais in Paris that made the most impact.

Called upon to receive the highest distinction a civilian can, Karl Lagerfeld was embraced in a chorus of claps and cheers as he accepted the award. La Médaille Grand Vermeil de la Ville de Paris was presented to Kaiser Karl by the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo following kind words in tribute to the Lagerfeld’s remarkable achievements in service of the French capital.

“You make Paris more magic, more creative, more beautiful. Paris loves you, Karl. You are Paris.”

Lagerfeld’s contributions in fostering the reputation of Parisian fashion that brings high-spending visitors and international press to Paris have been evident in the six consecutive shows he has staged in Paris in the previous year alone. Through the years, the storied love-affair has yielded a 35-meter high rocket ship, a recreation of the Parthénon, a life-sized Japanese dollhouse and a Chanel supermarket, amongst many other sets that inspired awe and wonderment.

“Everyone is in love with Paris again… Vive la France!” Karl Lagerfeld.
