Givenchy names Clare Waight Keller as the new artistic director

Givenchy has named Clare Waight Keller as its new artistic director—the first woman couturier at the French house, succeeding Riccardo Tisci after his 12-year tenure. Previously the creative director at Chloé for six years, Waight Keller was most recognised for keeping the house’s signature romantic, ’70s-leaning aesthetic in check with a contemporary touch. Her swan song for Chloé was the Autumn/Winter 2017 collection during Paris Fashion Week earlier this month.

“Hubert de Givenchy’s confident style has always been an inspiration, and I am very grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this legendary house’s history,” says Waight Keller in a statement. “I look forward to working with the teams and writing a new chapter in this beautiful story.”

With a solid portfolio that includes Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Tom Ford and Pringle of Scotland, Waight Keller isn’t the first female couturier of a prominent brand under LVMH—Maria Grazia Chiuri made Dior history in July 2016 as the first creative director of the Parisian house. While we won’t expect gothic, edgy inclinations that Tisci made popular (and commercially successful), we can’t wait to see what the British designer has up her sleeve that could possibly represent a new era at Givenchy. Her debut collection for the brand will be Spring 2018 this October in Paris.
