BURO Spotlights: Machino’s New Store in Subang Jaya

Machino is on the move! After two years in Petaling Jaya, the local brand is entering a new era with its relocation to SS18, Subang Jaya. Situated in a vibrant stretch of shop lots, the freshly opened store offers not only an upgraded shopping experience but also convenience, with plenty of parking and just a stone’s throw from the train station—a perfect combo for today’s modern shoppers.

At the buzzing grand opening last week, the air was filled with excitement as shoppers explored the beautifully curated displays, indulged in gelatos and snapped photos at the photo booth. Amidst the lively celebration, we caught up with founders Esther and Amy Tai to hear their thoughts on the change, the challenges of crafting this new space, and what loyal customers can look forward to in this exciting chapter.

What drove the decision to relocate the store?

Esther: “While we loved our time in SS2, Petaling Jaya, we felt it was time to take things up a notch. The new location in SS18, Subang Jaya provides a larger space, better parking, and easier access for those relying on public transport. It just made sense to go for it and elevate the Machino experience!”

Were there any challenges you encountered during the relocation process?

Amy: “We started looking for a new location in May last year, visiting several spots before settling on this one in August. Then came the fun part—working with an interior architecture firm to bring our dream store to life. It took us about two months to perfect the concept and ensure every detail was spot on.

But, of course, we faced a few challenges along the way. The 30-year-old building threw us some curveballs during construction, leading to unexpected fixes and a few adjustments to our budget. We even had to delay the opening three times! But we powered through, and by mid-December, construction was completed. We decided to kick off 2025 with a bang by opening our doors and celebrating this new chapter in style.”

What is the inspiration behind the new store?

A: “Our vision for the store was to craft a space that’s both fun and flexible. We’ve integrated modular furniture for our shoe displays, so we can easily mix things up and keep the space fresh. The surfaces are also wrapped in PU leather, adding a touch of luxury to the space.

The star of the show is the tile art centrepiece, hand-painted by Willwin Yang. It depicts a cosy apartment scene with moments of community life, decorated with the iconic Hana flower tiles. It’s vibrant, warm, and very Machino.”

Did you work with designers or architects on the store’s design and its interior?

E: “Aside from Yang’s magic touch on the gorgeous tile art, we’ve teamed up with Studio Karya to design a store that truly reflects our style.”

Are there any new services introduced in the new space?

E: “We’re still fine-tuning a few ideas, but one exciting update is that Machino now offers in-store shoe size exchanges! We’re all about keeping things simple, smooth, and hassle-free for our valued customers.”

Do you see this new location as a stepping stone for further expansion?

E: “Now that we’re based in Subang Jaya, we’re setting our sights on a prominent mall in the heart of Kuala Lumpur within the next two years. Other than that, we’re looking to bring Machino to Singapore for pop-ups, following the incredible support we received during our visit last year.

What’s next for your brand?

A: “We’re growing the Machino family! From our ladies’ shoes to Mini Machino for kids, and Machino Wellness—our new line for men and seniors (women can enjoy them too!)—we’re making sure there’s something for everyone. Shoes will always be our core, and our mission is to provide chic, comfortable and reasonably priced footwear for all.”
