NYFW Report: Should we go on holiday with Michael Kors’ SS23 collection?

Inspired by a resort getaway

Filling a glass warehouse with lush greenery and mirrors to mimic a water effect, the Michael Kors’ SS23 runway show was akin to stepping into a star-studded island resort on an exotic island.

In true Michael Kors’ fashion, the NYFW show was a star-studded affair with huge names such as Anne Hathaway, Serena Williams, Twice’s Dahyun, Nina Dobrev, and Sabrina Carpenter at the front row. The setting was beautiful, where every corner can do your photos and videos no wrong. But more than that, it was a space that was hard to leave and easy to disconnect from bustling Manhattan. It’s fitting when the theme is, after all, urban resort, celebrating the fusion of urbanity and nature. According to Michael Kors:

"Urban resort to me is the best of both worlds, it's the luxury and sleek elegance of city life with the laid-back glamour you find in the best resorts. This collection uses a lot of elements that you normally find on holiday—lots of white, lots of bareness, soft caftans, bare strappy sandals—mixed with the crisp tailoring and polish you need in an urban environment."

If I have to describe Kors’ collections, more often than not, it’s that they’re feminine, romantic and desirable. The first look was a silk skirt suit in blazing white with a plunging neckline, which was a nod to Michelle Pfeiffer’s character in Scarface. What followed was Bella Hadid in a black bandeau, matching sarong accentuated by a sizable gold-buckled belt and a blazer draped over her shoulders. Perhaps it’s a candid suggestion of what to wear so one can go straight from the airport to the resort’s private beach. It’s no doubt sexy.

Fringe detailing was another familiar sight throughout the collection, along with plunging necklines and gold accessories. Caftans are given the sleek satin finish, while maxi dresses, a billowy train, large floral prints, or asymmetrical hemlines. Gowns—for that cocktail party in the grand ballroom—in Kors’ signature style of a plunging neckline and high slit make an appearance in a shimmery gold-speckled version. Alternatively, show up in a long-sleeved high neck top decked in gold sequins, paired with flowy, flared slacks in a light yellow shade.

For the colour palette, we went through white-on-white, black-on-black, bright reds, high contrast combos of white/poppy pink and black, shimmery metallics or sequins, before landing on a handful of tropical lime and sky blues.

As for Michael Kors’ SS23 collection of handbags, minaudiere clutches in shimmery or metallic options were spotted, with the other essential handbag being a large bucket bag. Metallic cuffs were often the models’ main accessory that had me thinking of Wonder Woman and how her hometown Themyscira could be a great resort destination. Footwear-wise, it was strappy sandals galore—some that tie up till just below the knee and others just around the ankles.

Overall, the collection worked for every body and almost every destination. I’m sold, but the only question now is: where to?
