Louis Vuitton Monogram Celebrates 130 Years of Art, Travel and Style
Etched in elegance
130 years ago, Georges Vuitton stitched more than a pattern—he stitched a legacy. The Louis Vuitton Monogram, with its intertwined initials and delicate floral motifs, was created as both a tribute to his father and a clever safeguard against imitation.
At the turn of the century, Paris was alive with Neo-Gothic architecture, Japonism, and the first whispers of Art Nouveau—an inspiring backdrop for a design that would become a symbol of modernity, restraint, and timeless style.
The Monogram first appeared in linen jacquard, its soft ecru and terre de Sienne tones catching light and movement in subtle ways. Soon it adorned the Maison’s iconic trunks, cementing its link to the Art of Travel. From trunks to Keepall, Speedy, Noé, and vanity cases, the pattern journeyed across continents, taking on new shapes and meanings with each piece.
Throughout its history, the Monogram has been reimagined by a succession of visionaries, each leaving a distinct imprint on the pattern. Vivienne Westwood, Azzedine Alaïa, Karl Lagerfeld and Manolo Blahnik brought their own visions, pushing it into fresh, unexpected forms.
In recent years, artists such as Jeff Koons and Urs Fischer have taken it further, using the Monogram as a starting point for contemporary art interventions that play with scale, material and familiar motifs. Through these varied reinterpretations, the Monogram remains a canvas as bold, alive, and endlessly inspiring as ever.
This year, Louis Vuitton celebrates 130 years of this emblematic canvas with collections that honour its past while embracing the present. The celebration begins with the Maison’s most iconic bags, from the Speedy and Keepall to the Noé, Alma and Neverfull.
The Monogram Anniversary collection takes the Maison’s trunk savoir-faire and reimagines it in three special-edition bags. Monogram Origine collection brings the 1896 pattern to life in a new linen-cotton jacquard, softened in delicate pastel hues.
Meanwhile, the VVN collection celebrates the poetry of Louis Vuitton leather, and the Time Trunk collection creates a dialogue between past and present, using trompe-l’œil printing to transform the textures and metallic details of historic trunks into artful illusions.
