Fashion Insider: New face Juju Yahya on her KLFW 2024 debut
Chasing dreams
What makes a model stand out from the crowd? Height is often a key factor, but it’s not the only one. Unique attributes such as skin complexion, distinctive features, and runway charisma are also crucial. Thankfully, the local fashion industry has been embracing diversity like never before, with many fresh faces appearing on magazine covers and runways.
One recent standout is Juju Yahya—a 22-year-old advertising student and part-time model. Born in Kuala Lumpur, Juju has been drawing attention for her striking dark skin, which brings a refreshing diversity in the local scene. This year is particularly special for her, as she made her debut at Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week 2024. Ahead, we spoke with Juju about her modelling career and her experience walking for Uzair Shoid.

What was your first memory of fashion?
“Growing up, I often visited Pasar Seni and Taman Paramount and was captivated by how people layer their outfits. They inspired me to do the same with my outfits and I think it’s a cool way to express your fashion sense to others.”
How did you get started as a model and what made you decide to be one?
“My modelling career began with a gig for a streetwear brand created by a high school friend. From there, I explored casting opportunities on Twitter. My tan skin and hijab helped me stand out, especially given the limited representation at the time. I frequently shared my modelling journey on social media as well, which led brands to notice me and start reaching out directly.”
Who have been some of your fashion role models or inspirations, and why?
“I have a few favourites in mind, but for now, Natasha Noor and Mona Tougaard. Their tan skin and features resonate with me, and I admire how they embody both strength and elegance in their looks. They have a unique ability to own any style, and I aspire to achieve that same level of versatility and grace.”
Can you share your experience walking at this year’s KLFW?
“This year marks my debut at KLFW, and walking in the very first show on opening day was both exciting and nerve-wracking! The pressure was intense, but the excitement of stepping onto such a stage in a stunning outfit by Uzair Shoid made it all worth it. With the runway stretching out and spotlights illuminating every step, it felt like I had finally made it as a model.”

How would you describe your style?
“I used to be into vibrant colours and bold patterns, but now my style is more minimalist with a touch of Y2K. I love the look of a fitted top paired with baggy pants; it flatters my body proportions perfectly. That said, I’m always open to experimenting with anything that catches my eye, even if it’s a little unconventional!”
If you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?
“This is a tough choice, but I’d go with a denim boiler suit. It’s versatile and easy to style, and able to seamlessly transition from casual to formal with the right accessories. More importantly, it’s incredibly comfortable, especially when paired with the perfect boots!”
What is the biggest lesson that you have learned since you became a model?
“Modelling is far more complex than most people imagine. It’s nice to romanticise the life of a model, but there’s a lot more to it. The key is to stay humble and appreciate every moment along the way.”

Which model would you most like to work together with?
I want to work with Ridzman Zidaine, the Malaysian model who walked for Louis Vuitton! I admire his walk and features, and working with him would be an incredible honour. It would be a dream come true and one of those moments where I could proudly say, ‘Mum, I made it!’”
What are your goals for the coming years?
“I would like to work as an international model and make the local fashion industry proud. I am passionate about expanding my fashion knowledge, working with diverse creative talents, and experimenting with different types of photoshoots. I also aspire to strengthen my runway presence with a more impactful walk and striking look.”
What would you be if you were not a model?
“I see myself remaining in the fashion industry, potentially backstage. While I’m still in school, I’m confident that the skills I’m gaining will help me thrive in the industry, even if modelling isn’t the route I take.”
