New York Fashion Week AW17: Highlights of Day 5

Carolina Herrera‘s love for the white shirt continues as she worked it numerous ways in the Autumn/Winter 2017 collection. From wrapped waist to big pilgrim collar and button-ups with velvet ribbon accents, the wardrobe staple was paired with voluminous black or white skirts. For eveningwear, instead of ball gowns and corseted silhouettes, Herrera presented fluid, demure shapes including a tiered gown in pale pink, sequined tea gown and a lush velvet number with chiffon knotted at the neck.

Each year, since 2002, the Proenza Schouler show is one of the highlights of NYFW. After this season, designers Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough will be saying goodbye to the Big Apple and are headed to Paris, where they will present their pre and main season sellections during Couture week. However, one does not have time to mourn as the designers delivered a terrific Autumn/Winter 2017 collection. The treatment of their logo is sliced horizonally, appearing on extra-long zipper pulls of jackets and even handbags. Cut-outs appear everywhere from the waist to abdomen and shoulder, some even resulting to asymmetrical sleeves (read: one that bares the arm) on boxy outerwear. As unpractical as it sounds, we certainly would not mind the interesting detail. Besides, fashion doesn’t always have to be practical, right?

When interviewed backstage, Phillip Lim commented that he worked on the idea of “new romantics, colour” as well as “making clothes that women want”. Well, the designer has definitely accomplished that. The mostly black and white collection were given splashes of colour, such as Yves Klein blue and shades of pink, and even the show set with red walls and a pink carpet was a scene-stealer. Lim took on femininity by sending pieces like ruffled lace cocktail dresses, off-kilter shaped flute skirts and airy mid-length frocks down the runway. And if the romantic pieces did not make your heart flutter, the statement accessories such as the chain-link belts and organic-looking jewellery will.
