10 Best looks from Spring 2017 Haute Couture week

1. Chanel, Look 64

It’s quite impossible to not get swept away by the sparkling spectacle that Chanel offered this season. This glittery, sheath dress decked in mirrored embroidery (effectively mimicking the floors that the models strutted on) is a delight in its own right, coupled with a touch of frou frou courtesy of balls of pink feathers decorated on the arms and hemline of the dress.

2. Dior, Look 55

Maria Grazia Chiuri gave us fairy-tale worthy gowns made of organza and tulle in powdery colours, complemented with accessories that played along with the forest fairy theme. This tulle bustier dress with Impressionist garden-effect feather embroidery took a whopping 2200 hours of work, with 3D-like details upon closer inspection.

3. Armani Privé, Look 39

Orange was the new black at Armani Privé, prized for its optimism and “freshness”, in the words of Mr. Armani himself. A multitude of sunset-hued ensembles were present, but this one scores for its undulating, wave-like pleats constructed into a ball-like shape, along with a beaded bodice and bow clinched at the waist.

4. Giambattista Valli, Look 40

Giambattista Valli’s signature, extravagant tulle gowns that usually close his couture shows didn’t have anything on this princessy pink confection. Gold polka dots scatter upon the first layer of this gown, with a honeycomb-shaped netted overlay to give it a Barbie-esque aesthetic. Not forgetting, that exquisite emerald pendant to complete this breathtaking look.

5. Atelier Versace, Look 15

Donatella Versace wanted to showcase the “pure power of Atelier Versace”, and she very well did with a collection featuring fluid liquid draping and handwoven crystal cords. This compelling ombré gown sports pleated fabric waves that make up the most of the eye-catching details surrounding the body, with a subtly flared pleated skirt for a voluminous silhouette.

6. Guo Pei, Look 6

Over-the-top doesn’t quite cut it at Guo Pei Couture SS17, a collection that was fueled by European ecclesiastical elements and costume-inclining fervour. We can’t decide if we’re more taken by the visible bones of this short-to-long creation, or the gilded trimmings and accessories that propel this look to Alice in Wonderland territory.

7. Maison Margiela, Look 24

This might just be the most Instagram-ed look from couture week, and we aren’t surprised. How often do you see an almost too realistic face constructed from tulle emblazoned over a coat? This face from John Galliano’s ‘Artisanal’ collection for Maison Margiela is actually handmade by artist Benjamin Shine, and required more than 300 hours to create!

8. Valentino, Look 59

Pierpaolo Piccioli allowed exceptional craftsmanship and ethereal simplicity to be the beacon of Valentino’s couture collection. This lightweight, dreamy chiffon dress is embroidered with rhinestones, and a térébenthine tulle shirt which delicately veils the gown is reminiscent of the Atelier’s rituals that remain constant over time—how fitting, indeed.

9. Viktor and Rolf, Look 28

Aptly named ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’, Viktor and Rolf were inspired by Kintsugi, a Japanese principle of repairing pottery with gold accents. Hence, the seemingly fragmented patches of embroidery that decorate this frothy tulle gown, altogether signifying that beauty too can arise from imperfections.

10. Givenchy, Look 13

Talk about welcoming the Year of the Rooster with aplomb. This one-of-a-kind nude illusion gown from Givenchy is embellished with four types of feathers, including rooster feathers, cut feathers, ostrich feathers, and pink bird of paradise feathers. Extravagance done right, in a nutshell.
