Malaysia is blessed with a diverse and unique culture, and burgeoning creative talent. Just last month, we saw Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week return with over 80 local labels, and with time we’re hoping to see the platform introduce more homegrown designers. Patriotism aside, wearing local designers is one way to support our local economy by providing jobs to artisans. Also, it greatly reduces your carbon footprint. Local designers operate on a smaller scale and have a significantly lower impact on the environment. Ahead, three Malaysians, each with distinctive styles dress up from head to toe in local labels.
Stephanie’s style: Bold and colourful

I love experimenting with bold prints, and then clashing them. My starting point was the oversized plaid blazer by Kree, which I was immediately drawn to with its mannish, oversized silhouette and cheery yellow hue. One way to clash prints is to pair them up with a unifying colour, so I matched it with an animal printed PVC skirt from Maatin Shaakir. For my inner, I went with a teal ‘Girls Jom Skate’ logo tee for a striking colour combo. To complete this #extra look, I opted for plain white heels as a neutralising accessory.
Farah’s style: Chic minimalist

Farah is heavily influenced by the cities she visits and credits her style to chic Parisian women. She enjoys a minimalistic yet luxurious take on fashion, and took to a ruffled suit by Mimpikita in a muted sea foam green hue, and then accessorised it with a printed scarf by My Apparel Zoo. For shoes, she was drawn to Nelissa Hilman’s gold toned mules for its opulence but also the traditional Malaysian weave that was incorporated in its craftmanship.
Haylena’s style: Simple and monochrome

A tomboy at heart, Haylena’s everyday style usually consists of jeans and a t-shirt. But when she needs to turn it up, she taps into her femininity and channels classy elegance. She has an affinity to polkadots and took to a pleated maxi skirt, and paired it with an ecru puffy sleeved blouse, both by Maarimaia. Not one to wear heels often, she completed her ensemble in sensible square toed kitten heels by Kulet.
