’90s revival: Get your choker on

The choker has an interesting history—one of juxtaposing nature, particularly in the far past. In the late 19th century, a ribbon around the neck of a woman could be the sign of an escort, as depicted in Manet’s famous painting Olympia (1863). Yet in the same era, they were also adorned by ballerinas, the upper class, and royalty, commonly in the form of pearls and velvet. And then the 1990s happened: the accessory took the world by storm, becoming a staple on the streets and red carpets alike.

It took a quiet turn after that, but it wasn’t long before it resurfaced prominently in the early 2010s, and more recently—on the runways of AW16 fashion month. Rihanna is no stranger to sporting the accessory, and at her Fenty x Puma show, models wore chokers brushed with street cool. Similarly at Alexander Wang, edginess reigned with dog collar-esque numbers. On the other hand, Lanvin and Chanel kept them elegantly sophisticated with intricate, metallic creations.
