5 Biggest TikTok trends that you’ll see everywhere (not just on TikTok) this 2021

There’s no denying that TikTok is one of the hottest apps in the world—according to Wallaroo, the app has accumulated over one billion users in over 150 countries, and has been downloaded over 200 million times in the United States alone. The China-based app allows users to create, share and view content based around lip syncing, dancing, comedy skits and other physical activities. Not only does its user base largely consist of young kids, but the older generation is jumping on board with the app too—so if you’ve just downloaded the app, fret not as it’s not too late to get on it now.

The year 2020 was undoubtedly a favourable year for TikTok. With everyone stuck in their homes due to the pandemic, the app quickly became a virtual escape for many. As TikTok continues to catch the attention of online users and dominate global top app lists, these are some of the 2021 TikTok trends you should hop on before it’s too late:

1. The Vivi trend

The Vivi trend is named after Vivi, a member from K-pop girl group Loona, as TikTokers cropped a snippet of her dance cover to ‘Russian Roulette’ by Red Velvet and layered it with ‘YRN by Migos and Young Thug. Tens of thousands of people have tried to replicate the dance trend and we suggest you give it a try too!

2. ‘Have your partner buy a nonexistent feminine product’ trend

“Oochie Cooch 3000”

TikTokers are sending their significant others into stores to ask for feminine products that aren’t real. The aftermath? Very confused men returning home empty-handed. One particular video posted by TikToker Kyle and Jade has garnered over six million likes as she filmed her husband coming out of a store looking flustered while shaking his head. He shared with his wife about how the store staff gave him puzzled looks (perhaps an understatement) after he asked for the “Oochie Cooch 3000”.

3. Dracotok

If you’re a fan of the Harry Potter franchise—and you still have got a massive crush for Draco Malfoy—Dracotok is where you step foot into paradise. This TikTok community is basically a fanbase dedicated to the platinum blonde haired-stud from Slytherin. The #dracotok or #dracotiktok became widely popular on the app last September and it’s still growing as you read this—so much so that even Tom Felton, the actor who played Draco Malfoy, started an account and dueted (reacted) to the videos.

4. Tortilla food hack

TikTok isn’t just a platform for dancing and lip syncing videos—every now and then, we come across useful food hacks such as this tortilla hack that recently blew everyone’s minds. A folding trick to create the most perfect of wraps, it involves a simple cut-and-fold technique where you lay your tortilla out flat before placing an ingredient into each of the circle’s quadrants. After folding the sections over one another, simply heat up the wrap on a panini press. If you have a trick or two that’s worth sharing, TikTok will welcome you with open arms. Who knows, you might even wake up to your phone blowing up with notifications the next day.

5. Buss It challenge

The latest viral #bussitchallenge is a dance trend that has taken over everyone’s TikTok #fyp (aka ‘for you page’) over the last three weeks. The challenge is named after Erica Banks’s rap song, ‘Buss It’. Similar to 2020’s #wipeitdown challenge, users will start off the video dressed in “lazy” attire as Nelly’s ‘Hot in Here’ plays; as they drop into a squat and start twerking, the background music changes to Banks’s track.

This dance challenge has been so popular that even celebrities are joining in the fun, such as famous actress Gabrielle Union and Chloe Bailey from the iconic R&B duo group Chloe x Halle.
