Listen to: A mixtape by the cast of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’

One of the many things to love about Guardians of the Galaxy is definitely their fun, ’70s pop soundtrack – music, or more specifically the two mix tapes that Peter Quill’s mum made for him, is one of Star-Lord’s most prized possessions after all.

And with the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 coming up in a month’s time (it’s slated for a 27 April release in local cinemas!), here’s a playlist to get you pumped and ready for more adventures with the Guardians – the film’s cast and director James Gunn have put together a mixtape inspired by the sequel. Listen to the picks from the likes of Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana here, along with explanations for their choices below it:

‘Sharp Dressed Man’ by ZZ Top – chosen by Kurt Russell (Ego)

“I can see this working in the movie, with the energy it has. It could be Ego’s theme!”

‘She’s Gone’ by Hall & Oates – chosen by James Gunn (director)

“It’s one of the greatest pop songs ever written. I really wanted to put it into Vol. 2, but didn’t have a place for it.”

‘The Prettiest Star’ by David Bowie – chosen by Elizabeth Debicki (Ayesha)

“It’s one of my favourite songs, and I feel the lyrics suit our film so perfectly. Loss, love and the galaxy…”

‘Fuir Le Bonehur De Peur Qu’il Ne Se Sauve’ by Jane Birkin – chosen by Pom Klementieff (Mantis)

“It means ‘Fleeing happiness for fear it won’t save you’. I used to sing it at theatre school.”

‘Whiskey And You’ by Chris Stapleton – chosen by Chris Pratt (Star-Lord)

“When I’m on the road, I tend to listen to songs that allow me to bask fully in my loneliness. When I want to dive headfirst into sorrow, I listen to this.”

‘Angel Band’ by The Stanley Brothers – chosen by Michael Rooker (Yondu)

“I love gospel and this is one of my favourite pieces. I like sitting down, having a whiskey and listenin’ to some good music. Yeah!”

‘Gimme Shelter’ by The Rolling Stones – chosen by Dave Bautista (Drax)

“This is the song that pops right into my head. I listen to it over and over, in my car or while working out. It’s just something that resonates with me.”

‘Gentle On My Mind’ by John Hartford – chosen by Sean Gunn (Rocket/Kraglin)

“The great John Hartford song, made famous by Glen Campbell. I don’t why it means a lot to me. There’s just something sad and beautiful about it.”

‘The Obvious Child’ by Paul Simon – chosen by Zoe Saldana (Gamora)

“We actors are obvious children. Too stubborn to grow up, picking a profession where you get to play pretend for the rest of your life. This song is very powerful.”

‘Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien’ by Edith Piaf – chosen by Karen Gillan (Nebula)

“One of the greatest songs ever written. It feels like an ultimate ending, and the message is great. That’s gotta be the closing number for the mix.”
