‘Be Right Back’: A look into Jorja Smith’s new eight-track EP

Following the release of her two singles, ‘Addicted’ and ‘Gone’, Jorja Smith dropped her new EP titled Be Right Back which includes both of these tracks. In a Complex UK interview, she explains the title for her EP and why it isn’t a full-length studio album: “It’s called Be Right Back because it’s just something I want my fans to have right now. This isn’t an album and these songs wouldn’t have made it.”

The visuals for her music videos are an interesting choice. Savanah Leaf, the director for ‘Addicted’, also directed Gary Clark Jr’s ‘This Land’, which was nominated for a Grammy. What makes it unique is the fact that the whole thing was shot on Facetime. With a pandemic happening, this is probably the smartest way to film a music video.

‘Gone’ seems to continue with the theme of blurry videos, but this time it looks like it’s shot on a VHS camera. At the end of the video, Smith is seen singing along to a snippet of her song ‘Time’.

Feel free to decipher the deeper meaning behind her lyrics. After all, Smith herself encourages her listeners to do so. According to her, “Anyone who listens will hear it differently to what it actually means in the first place. That’s what I love.” Being able to relate to an artist’s words is usually what draws most listeners to the music.

Although Be Right Back isn’t intended to be Smith’s second album, it’s still a high-quality body of work. Since the release of her first album, she has worked with artists of different genres such as Dancehall singer and songwriter Burna Boy on ‘Be Honest’. Smith’s versatility is displayed effectively in this EP. Her smooth R&B vocals underscore every song, even when each track has its own distinct style.

From the rhythmic guitar strums on ‘Home’ to the bouncy reggae beats on ‘Bussdown’, this EP has everything you’d need before the release of her next full-length album in 2022.
