Leonard Cohen’s last poems to be published in a book this 2018

Leonard Cohen was best known for his poetic song lyrics and lyrical poems that were apparent even in his book titles such as Beautiful Losers and Death of a Lady’s Man. A book of his final work called The Flame will be published posthumously next year.

The volume will feature his last poems that were completed in the months before his passing at the age of 82. The Flame tells of “an enormously powerful final chapter in Cohen’s storied literary career,” said publisher Canongate. The singer himself selected all the poems and the book will also feature selected work from his notebooks, the full lyrics from his final three albums of music, prose and illustrations.

Many might not be aware but Leonard started his creative career as a writer before jumping into the music scene to give us many memorable hits. You can thank him for one of the most covered songs, Hallelujah that has been featured in more than a dozen studio albums from 1967 to 2016.

“During the final months of his life, Leonard had a singular focus – completing this book, taken largely from his unpublished poems and selections from his notebooks. The flame and how our culture threatened its extinction was a central concern,” said Robert Kory, who is the manager and trustee of Leonard’s estate.

The Flame is due to be out in October 2018.
