It’s that time of the year again—Le French Festival is back with one of its staple segments, the French Film Festival. Partnering with GSC cinemas, the film festival will be making its usual stops in the Klang Valley and Penang, along with an exciting debut in Kota Kinabalu. Don’t speak the language? No worries, rest assured there’ll be English subtitles.
L’Odyssée | The Odyssey
The biopic brings to the light the famous explorer Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau’s hectic life and his complicated relationship with his son Philippe. In 1943, he developed with his friend Emile Gagnan the Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus which opened a whole new world, that of the undersea, to mankind. From then on, Cousteau’s aim was to show this amazing new world to a wide audience through many documentaries and fiction films.
Rosalie Blum
Vincent Machot leads a very monotonous life: when he is not working in his barber shop, he spends his time with his cousin or his mother, with whom he lives. But one day, he ends up in Rosalie Blum’s grocery. Intrigued by this woman, he starts following her everywhere. From then on, his life becomes a series of unexpected events.
Chocolat | Monsieur Chocolat
Based on a true story, this film tells the story of ‘Chocolat’, the first Black circus artist in France. While playing a savage in a small provincial circus, he is discovered by the clown George Footit who suggests they set up a double act. The two clowns then become very successful in the Paris de la Belle Epoque. But alas, nothing lasts forever.
21 Nuits avec Pattie | 21 Nights with Pattie
Caroline, a forty-something Parisian, suddenly loses her mother while on summer holiday with her family. Despite their complicated relationship, she cuts her holiday short and travels to the small village where her mother used to live to organise her funeral. On arrival she meets Pattie, a very talkative and liberated neighbor. The day before Caroline leaves, her mother’s body mysteriously disappears…
Voir du pays | The Stopover
This is the Coulins sisters gutsy second feature that was screened as part of the Un Certain Regard at Cannes 2016. Marine and Aurore are two 25-year-old soldiers coming back from Afghanistan. Their patrol is invited to a Cypriot hotel to try and “forget about the war”. Though this short decompression period is meant to help them deal with all they have just been through, one does not get over violence that easily.
