They’re Out: Warner Bros. Pictures gives us the Suicide Squad in HD

When the first trailer for Warner Bros Pictures’s Suicide Squad unofficially leaked, the entertainment company was prompted to release a HD version on its Facebook page, which resulted in more than 300,000 shares on the first day itself. The trailer was supposed to be a treat for DC Comics fans at Comic-Con in San Diego but with smartphones abound, the clip got loose.

Warner Bros. shouldn’t feel too down since the trailer is an obvious win. With a Batman cameo and an eerie rendering of The Bee Gee’s I Started a Joke in the background, it’s hard not to get caught up in the darkness of the film. Most potent is the first look at Jared Leto’s Joker, a haunting double to Heath Ledger’s disturbing portrayal nearly a decade ago.

There’s a lot to look forward to: the film stars Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerain, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg and Cara Delevigne as Enchantress. A sharp and threatening Viola Davis is the Squad’s former-congressional-aide-turned-supervillain-manager. David Ayer wrote and directed the production. The movie is part of Warner Bros. confirmed slew of DC Comics film adaptations that will run from 2016 to 2020. You can expect the list to cover at least Wonder Woman, The Justice League and The Flash.

First conceived in a 1959 issue of DC Comics’s The Brave and the Bold, Suicide Squad is a taskforce of supervillains undertaking government black ops missions in exchange for clemency. While the villains mostly follow through, they are still supervillains with fraught histories and murkier futures.  These swaying allegiances are why all those DC villains never seem to stay in lockup. It seems pretty apt then that the trailer went rogue too.
