This April, expect an exciting lineup of new small-screen offerings guaranteed to keep you entertained all month long. From high-octane action thrillers and true crime dramas to sci-fi adventures, these are 14 exhilarating new films and TV shows coming to streaming platforms in April 2024. 

 

Parasyte: The Grey 

When and where: 5 April 2024 on Netflix

Starring: Koo Kyo-hwan, Lee Jung-hyun, Kwon Hae-hyo, Kim In-kwon

Watch if: You enjoy the body-snatcher genre 

What happens when parasitic life forms infiltrate South Korea and you can no longer tell the difference between humans and aliens? Such is the premise of Parasyte: The Grey, inspired by Hitoshi Iwaaki’s legendary manga of the same name. The series follows Su-in, a young woman who must come to terms with her newfound co-existence with a parasite, and the efforts of Team Grey, a group dedicated to fighting the mysterious life forms that live off humans.

Watch if: You can never say no to a good private detective story

John Sugar is joining the ranks of famous private detectives such as Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot and Jessica Jones. In the series, the American private investigator is on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar attempts to unravel the story behind Olivia’s whereabouts, he will unearth shocking secrets from the Siegel family; some very recent, others long-buried.

Known as the Godfather of J-pop, Kitagawa’s long history of sexual abuse shocked the entire nation when the BBC revealed that he spent a lifetime abusing the young boys in his talent agency. Almost 1000 men have come forward as survivors of Kitagawa’s abuse. After exposing the heinous crimes of Japanese pop mogul Johnny Kitagawa to the rest of the world, journalist Mobeen Azhar returns with another compelling documentary that will investigate the aftermath of a predator.

 

The Fable

Adapted from the best-selling manga of the same name by Katsuhisa Minami, The Fable follows a legendary hitman only known as “Fable” who trained his whole life to become the world’s best assassin. After ending his year with more confirmed kills than ever before, Fable finds himself at a loss when the head of his crime family orders him to lay low and not kill anyone for an entire year. While living in Osaka at a yakuza hideout, Fable must learn to control his temperament and lead an ordinary life to survive.

Watch if: You want to watch a K-drama with a new and unique setting

It’s not every day you get a series exploring the lab-grown meat industry. In Blood Free, CEO Yoon Jayoo has made millions from her product BF, which now dominates the genetically engineered cultured meat market. Woo Chaewoon is a former elite soldier who has dedicated his life to finding the perpetrator behind a ghastly attack that left his colleagues dead and the President of Korea disabled. When he is hired to become Jayoo’s personal bodyguard as her life becomes increasingly endangered, he discovers that the two’s lives are more intertwined than he could imagine and must uncover the truth before it’s too late.

In December 1776, Franklin is world famous for his electrical experiments, but his passion and power are tested when he embarks on a secret mission to France as America’s independence hangs in the balance. The Grimm Variations

Watch if: You always preferred the darker versions of fairy tales

Did you know that classic fairy tales such as Cinderella, Little Mermaid and Sleeping Beauty had much darker endings? Once upon a time, brothers Jacob and Wilhelm collected fairy tales from across the land and made them into a book. Little did many people know, they also had a younger sister, Charlotte. In this upcoming animated anthology series, The Grimm Variations will feature six fairy tales with a dark twist told from Charlotte’s unique perspective, exposing the shadowy and twisted side of human desire.

Watch if: You love buddy cop dramas

Set 10 years before the widely loved ‘70s and ‘80s Korean dama Chief Inspector, Chief Detective 1958 builds on the original series’ heritage to deliver punchy new plotlines with Detectives Park Yeonghan and Kim Sangsun. In this retro crime drama, a pessimistic detective and his team’s passions are suddenly reawakened as they work to catch a dangerous killer.
