5 Things to know about the ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’

1. It’s going to be dark

Based on the comic book series of the same name, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina reimagines the adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story. It follows Sabrina as she navigates through high school as a half-witch, half-mortal—but that’s probably as close as it gets to the lighthearted ’90s original we remember, as this version falls into the horror genre. Expect it to be “tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist”.

2. It has close ties with another recent Archie Comics adaptation

If you were thinking that it falls in line with the recent adaptation of Riverdale, well, it could be more similar than you think. Riverdale showrunner and Archie Comics’ chief creative officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa also penned this series, and serves as executive produces alongside Riverdale collaborators Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater and Lee Toland Krieger.

3. Kiernan Shipka is Sabrina the Teenage Witch

Kiernan Shipka of Mad Men fame takes on her first lead role as the titular character in the series. In case you are wondering, the cover image above is one of first two official photos just released today, and it depicts a scene from the dark Baptism of Sabrina. 4. Lots of familiar characters are set to appear

Playing Sabrina’s love interest is Ross Lynch, while the roles of Aunt Zelda and Aunt Hilda are assumed by Miranda Otto and Lucy Davis respectively. Other notable castings include Jaz Sinclair as Sabrina’s best friend Rosalind Walker, Michelle Gomez as Ms. Wardell/Madam Satan, Chance Perdomo as Ambrose Spellman, Richard Coyle as Father Blackwood, and Tati Gabrielle as Prudence. Salem will also appear in the series, but whether or not he will be able to speak is yet to be disclosed.

5. Last but not least, here’s when you can catch it

Mark the date: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina debuts on Netflix on 26 October 2018.
