This experiment opens our eyes towards the power of perspective

Much of what we know and understand about the world around us is often a result of socialisation and learned views and behaviour. A lifetime of the constant embedding and teachings from influences around us has probably shaped the way we see the world. Much like the industry of advertising, most information fed to us – consciously or not – shapes the way we view things.

This video by Canon goes to show the power of perception through the lens. Six photographers took on the task to separately shoot portraits of the same man, Michael. But the twist was that each photographer was given a different brief about Michael’s background.

The photographers were informed that they would be shooting a commercial fisherman, an ex-convict, a man who saved someone’s life, a self-made millionaire, a self-proclaimed psychic and a recovering alcoholic.  “A photograph is shaped more by the person behind the camera than by what’s in front of it,” Canon points out.
