Spanning 17 acres, the latest project by Zaha Hadid Architects located in Riyadh is a non-profit institution with a mission to research the most effective use of energy and sustainable energy solutions. Like all Zaha Hadid structures, the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Centre (KAPSARC) immediately catches the eye with a stunning honeycomb design—it was designed by the renown architect before her passing.

Holding steadfast to its mission, the research campus is designed in a way that minimises energy consumption. The buildings are angled to lessen the impact of harsh light and heat in the hot desert climate, while the rooftop solar panels have the capacity to store up to 5,000 megawatts a year, and potable water is recycled and reused across the site. Composed of five different buildings that are connected to form a whole, the design also allows for easy expansion in the future.
