Does blue light accelerate skin ageing and can you slow it down?

Growing older is not easy. Apart from gaining years of experience and wisdom, everything else does not sound too great for us. Our hair starts turning grey, our body isn’t as flexible as it used to be, and all sorts of telling signs appear on the skin such as sun spots, fine lines and wrinkles. We’re not saying that there’s anything wrong with growing older, rather, all we want is to look like JLo when we reach her age. Granted, she can afford lifting procedures, of course, but that’s all in the details.

Technology today is both a blessing and a curse. As much as our everyday devices have improved our quality of life significantly, it has also been proven that the artificial blue light they emit brings a negative impact on the skin as it desynchronises the natural night-time repairing process in our cells. Now think about it—from our handphones to the TV, laptop and tablet—when are we not on our screens? And all those videos we’re watching to wind down before we sleep, they’re not doing us any good either. It’s alarming to think about the level of free radical exposure we subject our skin to daily.

What’s even worse, since the first signs of ageing appear around our eyes—such as dark circles, dryness, puffiness and crow’s feet—even if you do get a well-rested night, it might not look that way due to the cumulative exposure to blue light. The bad news doesn’t stop there; scientists at Estée Lauder have made a discovery that’s left us feeling wearier of screen time. Blue light exposure can more than double free-radical production in skin cells!

Thankfully, all hope is not lost, especially since research has also been done to find ways to combat this issue. The solution lies in a new generation of eye care: the Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Supercharge Gel-Creme. Formulated with a new double free-radical fighting action, featuring exclusive FR-Defense™ technology—which, for the first time, helps skin resist the production of free radicals in response to environmental assaults—this breakthrough product works on neutralising existing damage and rejuvenates the look of the entire eye area.
