TikTok’s latest hair trend revival is the bubble braid—here’s how you can DIY the look

You’ve seen it everywhere lately, haven’t you? It goes by many names—the bubble braid, the bubble ponytail, the oversized bubble hairstyle… et cetera. Instantly recognisable, the beauty of the bubble braid is how self-explanatory it is—no matter what it’s called, you can picture it. It’s timeless.

It’s the trademark ‘do of Brit Award-winning singer-songwriter Griff. We’ve seen the likes of Kendall Jenner and Ariana Grande wearing the look on-stage and on the red carpet. More recently, the classic style made its way onto Priyanka Chopra at the BAFTAs, while Doja Cat sported a latex-heavy rendition at the Grammys earlier this year. Before then, the style was no stranger to Fashion Week, cropping up at the Molly Goddard SS17 runway.

The real trailblazer, though? Before any of these ladies came along, the braid graced the head of Aladdin’s Jasmine way, way back in the day. The point is: It’s nothing new. So why is it back en vogue?

TIP: For added volume, you can add a few extensions and a few spritzes of texturising spray into the mix.

For a cute faux Dutch braid, try this variation:

TIP: If you’re not keen on visible elastics, you could always go the extra mile and wrap each elastic with a small section of hair.

If your hair is on the shorter side, and you’re looking to integrate extensions into your look, these tutorials are perfect for you:

TIP: Match the extensions you use to your hair texture for the best results!
