New scents to discover this weekend: Les Eaux de Chanel

An invitation to travel, and to dream, the new Les Eaux de Chanel is inspired by three of Gabrielle Chanel’s favourite locations: Deauville, Biarritz, and Venice. Created by perfumer Olivier Polge, the scents evoke unchartered waters, and signify the start of a new adventure. “More than the actual reality of the destination, I liked the idea urbanites make of it when they dream of a weekend away in the country,” says Polge.

PARIS-DEAUVILLE

Holiday destination of choice for Parisians, the seaside town of Deauville was where Gabrielle Chanel opened her first shop in 1913, with the help and financial assistance of Boy Capel. The immediate impression of Paris-Deauville is a bright, bitter orange rind, followed by aromatic basil leaf, which then reveals essence of rose and jasmine-like notes, further grounded by a woody patchouli.

PARIS-BIARRITZ

Two years after the launch of her shop in Deauville, Gabrielle Chanel headed to yet another glitzy holiday destination, Biarritz, where she opened another store, next to the casino and the beach. Inspired by the ocean, the Paris-Biarritz fragrance is ‘the most aquatic fragrance in the Les Eaux de Chanel collection,” says Polge. The fragrance opens with a burst of grapefruit and mandarin, with a heart of lily-of-the-valley, which then unfurls to scents of vetiver and white musk.

PARIS-VENISE

When Boy Capel tragically died in a car accident in December 1919, Gabrielle Chanel was inconsolable. To help take her mind of his death, she travelled to Venice on invitation by Misia and the painter José Maria Sert. Venice was where Mademoiselle Chanel was so taken by the the opulent designs of St Mark’s Basilica, that it became the inspiration for her first jewellery collections. Paris-Venise smells of a tinge of citrus and neroli with a hint of red berry, followed by Grasse geranium, iris, which then opens up to base notes of an ambery accord with vanilla and oriental scents. “I wanted people to smell that gateway to the Orient, which, at Chanel, is also an evocation of the baroque,” says Polge.
