Tried and tested: Kiehl's new Butterstick Lip Treatment SPF 25
With a delectable mix of lemon butter and coconut oil, Kiehl’s new Butterstick Lip Treatment provides a multitude of benefits for soft, kissable lips

It was an unusually bright and sunny day in Wellington, New Zealand, where we were for Kiehl's Fall Skincare Symposium. Over a delightful seafood lunch at the Dockside Restaurant and Bar on Wellington's waterfront, Kiehl's introduced its new lip formula, the Butterstick Lip Treatment with SPF 25 protection that proved perfect for use in the weather we were facing.

Formulated with a delicious combination of butters and oils, the Butterstick Lip Treatment is also lightly tinted in buildable colours that can be layered for a more intense hue. "We don't do colour just for the sake of colour," says Cammie Cannella, Vice President of Global Education at Kiehl's. "We chose ingredients that are nurturing to the skin, that offer nourishment and protection. The skin on the lips is much more delicate and sensitive than the rest of the face and we were looking at something that would be comfortable, that wouldn't feel oily or greasy and would protect the skin."

Two key ingredients feature in the Butterstick Lip Treatment: lemon butter, sourced from California and obtained by cold-pressing the lemon peel, and coconut oil, fairly traded from the Philippines. With over 90% saturated fatty acids, coconut oil helps to seal in moisture and retain skin hydration.

What I personally love about Kiehl's new lip product is that it comes with SPF 25 protection. If there's one thing I don't leave my house without, it's sunscreen but getting a lip balm with SPF protection isn't always the easiest to get. "Many people love that additional benefit," agrees Cannella, "But we also offer the Buttersticks with the option of non-SPF and in an untinted version as well."

"With very little built-in protection, lips are uniquely vulnerable to both UV rays and environmental aggressors," adds Dr. Adam Geyer, Kiehl's Consulting Dermatologist. "Paying attention to lip care from an early age is key to keeping the lips looking youthful and supple—I always recommend consistent use of sunscreen to reduce discoloration and diminish the rate of formation of lip lines. Topical antioxidants (lemon peel is rich in antioxidants) help slow the aging process, while hydrators to help prevent chapping and flaking."

Kiehls Butterstick Lip Treatment

A fan of the matte-lip look, Buro 24/7 Malaysia's fashion and beauty writer, Loh Wei Yeen, used a tinted Kiehl's Butterstick Lip Treatment in place of her go-to matte lipsticks on days her lips needed extra TLC. "I like that Kiehl's Butterstick Lip Treatment doesn't leave an oily, shiny residue unlike other lip balms, which is a plus point in my books. It has a great consistency, and the colour stays put even after I've had a drink or two. My Naturally Nude shade left more of a subtle, nude tint than an apparent hue-if it's a more intense shade you want, simply layer your favourite nude lipstick on top of the Butterstick Lip Treatment for a dash of colour while keeping your lips protected."

The Kiehl's Butterstick Lip Treatment is priced at RM85/stick. Click here to buy now.
