Piaget basks in the beauty and laughter of summer for its new collection
Piaget is taking the summer glow very literally this season—its new chapter, aptly named Sunny Side of Life, features incandescent gold and sparkling stones such as emeralds, yellow diamonds and black opals that add a charismatic radiance and aesthetic that's unique to the Maison.
The splendour of gold takes centre stage in this collection, be it mesh-woven, cabled, interpreted in leaf or wire form. Piaget's engraving process includes hand-guilloche work to form irregular streaks that resemble distinctive fibers of raw silk for a shimmering effect. Some of the new models are crafted from a new interpretation of the mesh that's exclusive to the Maison. What results is a rich embroidery made from gold mesh that is light and supple, as showcased on the Palm El Dorado necklace, sautoir necklace watch and watch-bracelet that looks almost weightless.
Piaget has collaborated again with feather artist Nelly Saunier for the Life is a Party cuff bracelet-a plumage of blue diamonds and sapphires using the feather marquetry technique. Another outstanding detail from this collection is its pioneering marquise cut that is a remarkable signature of the Maison. The beauty of this cut lies in its technique that has been perfected and modernized after an older navette cut. This older cut is named after its sailboat-hull shape, which gives diamonds a unique sparkle. The fiery stones scintillate outwards from the centre to either ends of the marquise, resulting in an array of stunning pieces such as the majestic Palm Sensation necklace, the Green oasis cuff watch, and the Pink Plumage earrings.
Apart from exquisite jewels, the Sunny Side of Life collection also has four Haute Horlogerie models with gold dials-all made with Piaget's Grand Feu enamelling for fascinating visual effects. After the gold is hand-guilloche using "basketweave" motifs, coloured powder is then applied to the dial. It is then subjected to successive firing and cooling phases for a shiny glazed effect that most refined enamels have. It takes a skilled enameller to achieve this meticulously-done result.
